Thames Path Restrictions on Cyclists and Joggers Extended

Banned during the day from Chiswick Mall to Putney Bridge until further notice

The closure of the Thames Path to joggers and cyclists between Chiswick Mall and Putney Bridge is to be extended until further notice.

It was originally shut by Hammersmith & Fulham Council over the Easter weekend between 10am – 6pm in order to help enforce social distancing laws.

Cyclists and runners were advised to seek alternative routes. The passage by the historic Dove pub has also been closed to all.

The police have been by the river helping wardens to enforce the new regulation.

Residents also took to Twitter to express their approval. William O'Neill tweeted @WillsLon: "Very impressed to see 2M distancing at the river walk, marshals on every corner making us all safe and allowing us to exercise safely during this time. Thanks to all involved."

Nikki Moore Brougham tweeted @girlgeekchic: " Thank you for the measures you took on the Thames’s river path Fulham, with cyclists and runners. The river marshalls made such a big difference,we actually enjoyed a safe walk and managed to maintain social distance. Pls can it stay like this for the rest of lockdown."

Residents also thanked the marshals in person, with some offering gifts of ice creams and lollies.

On Hammersmith Bridge a queuing system has been introduced to avoid people overtaking each other and to ensure the two metre rule is enforced. Marshalls will be in place to explain the procedure to bridge users.

No restrictions have been applied by Wandsworth council on the south bank of the river or by Hounslow Council further to the west on the north bank.

Cllr Wesley Harcourt, Cabinet Member for the Environment, said, “The measures introduced on the Thames river walk have made a significant difference and have proved popular with the vast majority of residents.

“We would like to thank residents for working together to ensure we can all enjoy our daily exercise in the safest possible way. Please Stay home, Protect the NHS, Save Lives.”

The council says the scheme will be kept under constant review during the current lockdown.
