The Age UK Activity Centre on Greyhound Road
July 13, 2026
Questions are being asked about the sudden closure of Age UK Hammersmith & Fulham's long-established community centre in Greyhound Road after older residents were reportedly given little more than a week's notice that services would cease.
The charity has confirmed that its centre at 105 Greyhound Road closed on Friday 3 July and that all services have been suspended. Visitors to its website are now greeted with a brief notice directing anyone needing urgent support to contact Hammersmith & Fulham Council.
However, no public explanation has been given for the closure and Age UK did not respond to our request for comment.
One resident commented, "The ones who come to Age UK for warmth in the cold. They come for their breakfasts every day or their lunches. The Centre in Greyhound Rd Hammersmith is closing its doors after 17 years... on Friday.
"That's giving them one week's notice. Where are they going to go? Nobody cares. WHY HAS THIS HAPPENED."
For many older residents, the Greyhound Road centre was much more than a place to receive advice. It hosted regular lunches, activities and social events, providing companionship for people who might otherwise spend much of their time alone.
Until shortly before the closure, the charity had been advertising its activities and services at the centre, while NHS information continued to describe it as providing support to older people across the borough.
The abrupt suspension of services has inevitably prompted speculation about what led to the decision. At present, there is no public indication whether the closure is temporary or permanent, nor has the charity explained whether it relates to financial, governance, staffing or building issues.
The website notice simply states: "Please be advised that the centre is now closed and all services are suspended from Friday, 3 July. If you require urgent support or assistance, please contact the London Borough of Hammersmith & Fulham, who can advise you on the services and support available."
The lack of information has left service users, volunteers and relatives with unanswered questions about what will happen next and whether the services they relied upon will return.
