One Hundred Views of Frida Kahlo at the Blank Canvas Gallery
Mexican artists reinterpret the work of one of art's most recognisable figures

A vivid burst of Mexican colour and imagination is coming to Fulham this September as “100 FRIDAS for FRIDA” brings one hundred artists from across Mexico to reinterpret one of the most recognisable figures in global art. The exhibition opens on Thursday 3 September at 6pm at Blank Canvas Gallery on Dawes Road, marking the first London showing of a project that has already travelled through Paris, Madrid, Rome and Mexico City.
The premise is simple but expansive: one hundred artists, one hundred perspectives, and one woman whose image and legacy continue to provoke fascination, debate and creative reinvention. As the organisers put it, the exhibition “brings together works created in a wide range of painting and graphic techniques by one hundred artists from different regions of Mexico, each presenting their own interpretation of Frida Kahlo and her legacy.”
Rather than repeating the familiar iconography of Kahlo — the flowers, the gaze, the self-portraits — the project invites artists to explore her contradictions, her strength, her vulnerability and the cultural weight she carries. The exhibition’s conceptual framework, developed by Dr Rafael Mauleón, pushes back against the commercial narrative that reduces Kahlo to suffering. His reflection presents her instead as “a multidimensional woman: vulnerable yet powerful, contradictory yet commanding, capable of transforming pain, identity and her own image into essential elements of her artistic language and public presence.”
The London edition is organised by ÁREA 7, the cultural initiative led by visual artist and promoter Fernando Aroche Bello. For Aroche Bello, the exhibition is part of a wider mission to create international pathways for Mexican artists and strengthen their presence in European cultural spaces. “We have become a constantly growing community where people engage in dialogue and reflection about art. Our aim is to help artists build an international career with transparent information, professional support and cultural promotion that makes each participation genuinely meaningful to their professional journey,” he explains.
ÁREA 7 has already brought the work of more than 700 artists to major European cities, with over 300 travelling in person to openings and related events. Its portfolio includes tributes to Van Gogh shown in Amsterdam and Brussels, Kafka-themed exhibitions in Prague and Vienna, and projects dedicated to Picasso and Dante. “100 FRIDAS for FRIDA” is one of its most ambitious undertakings, evolving from a Paris-focused concept in 2022 into a travelling exhibition shaped by enthusiastic public and media response.
Its arrival in London comes at a moment of renewed interest in Kahlo’s work and image across the city’s cultural institutions. For London audiences, the exhibition offers a rare chance to encounter Kahlo not through museum retrospectives or commercial merchandise, but through the eyes of contemporary Mexican creators who grapple with her legacy from within their own artistic and cultural contexts.
Blank Canvas Gallery will host the exhibition at its Fulham space, creating a new cultural bridge between Mexico and the United Kingdom. The organisers emphasise that the diversity of styles, generations and artistic languages represented in the show reflects the breadth of contemporary Mexican art — a landscape far richer and more varied than Kahlo’s global fame alone might suggest.
