Facelift for Iconic Broadway Building Set to Go Ahead
Extension and colour change approved by Council Planning Committee
The building, which sits in the centre of the Broadway and houses Barclays Bank, estate agents Barnard Marcus and Universal Music Publishing is highly distinctive with its green glazed elevator and sculpture at the southern end.
The building however is now set to be partially demolished with a new six storey high extension, a new roof terrace and entrance lobby and a change of colour to white.
The planning application was as follows:
Partial demolition of existing building facades to enable the erection of a double-height single storey lobby extension in the existing forecourt of the building and a part five part six storey extension fronting Vanston Place to provide mixed use comprising of use Class A1 and/or A2 at ground floor level and office use (Class B1) on the floors above; formation of a roof terrace at fifth floor level; proposed change of colour of external render of the existing building and re-cladding of external walls at ground floor level.
The planning office recommended that permission for the development should be granted and the Planning and Development Control Committee agreed at a meeting on May 19.
One of the conditiions attached is that the developer should pay a contribution towards the cost of planting trees in the area.
The building is owned by Fulham based company Romulus Construction, as the building opposite, 2 - 6 Fulham Broadway, currently home to Whole Foods Market.
The company says through these extensions, the proposal aims to improve access to the building, improve the quality of existing office accommodation, introduce new and extended retail units and also encourage pedestrian activity along Vanston Place. The current building uses - retail at ground floor and office at upper floors - will be retained and extended.
The familiar sculpture at the southern end of Fulham Centre, Clarion by Philip King, which was specially commissioned and designed for the site, will remain in its current position, in front of the newly extended lobby.
