MP for Chelsea and Fulham Writes to Residents
The Queen with Prince Charles at the State Opening of Parliament
Dear Resident,
I hope that you have a good week.
The Queen is Britain’s longest serving monarch, which is a remarkable feat. Her Majesty has dedicated her life to the United Kingdom and the Commonwealth and has been steadfast in her commitment to public service.
This year marks the 70th anniversary of The Queen’s accession to the throne, and her Platinum Jubilee will be a source of great happiness and celebration for many people in our local community, the country and around the world.
To honour her magnificent 70 years on the throne, up and down the country there will be many celebrations.
Locally, in Fulham we are continuing the tradition of celebrating the Queen’s milestone Jubilees. There will be numerous events to partake in, including street parties – which have historically been held throughout the borough to mark the Queen’s milestones.
Please do be aware that the deadline for applying to hold a Queen’s Platinum Jubilee street party is Friday 6 May 2022.
Before applying, it is worth knocking on your neighbour’s door or posting a message in the street WhatsApp Chat to check with your neighbours that no one else has already submitted an application for the street you live on.
In our local area there will also be a number of events over the Bank Holiday weekend from Thursday 3 to Sunday 6 June, including:
· Platinum Party in the Park, being held on Saturday 4 June in Ravenscourt Park and Bishops Park
· Platinum Picnic in the Park, being held on Sunday 5 June in Ravenscourt Park and Bishops Park
For further information and ways to get involved visit this web page.
On a more national scale, over the four-day Bank Holiday weekend in June 2022, which will feature an additional Bank Holiday, there will be an extensive programme of events including the Queen's Birthday Parade (Trooping the Colour), a Service of Thanksgiving at St Paul's Cathedral, and a Platinum Party at Buckingham Palace.
Spectacular moments in London and other major cities will be complemented by events in communities across the UK and the Commonwealth, allowing people to join together in celebration and thanks at a national and local level.
Furthermore, in keeping with tradition, a Platinum Jubilee medal will be awarded to people who work in public service including representatives of the Armed Forces, the emergency services and the prison services. This tradition stretches back to the reign of Queen Victoria when an official medal was designed to mark her 50th anniversary on the throne.
As local MP, Government Minister and Privy Counsellor I have been privileged to meet Her Majesty the Queen a few times, notably most years at the Chelsea Flower Show and also when I served as Treasurer of the Royal Household, 2013-15.
I very much look forward to celebrating our fantastic Queen!
Greg Hands
The Rt Hon Greg Hands MP
Member of Parliament for Chelsea and Fulham
