Restaurants Come and Go on Fulham Broadway

After number of closures in summer, new names move in this autumn

The first to close was beach themed restaurant Spiaggia, less than a year after launching last September. The restaurant was located in a "difficult" location at the foot of North End Road, opposite Waitrose, which has seen several restaurants come and go in recent years and as yet no one else has taken it over.

A few yards away, a question mark hangs over the future of WingsEggs which suddenly closed in summer within months of opening. In August, the restaurant's owners tweeted that they were redecorating and would return soon, but over a month later, there is no sign of it reopening.

Around the corner on Fulham Broadway the closure of Mexican cantina Guaca surprised many people as it had proved a popular addition to the SW6's foodie corner since opening in 2012.

However this site has since been redeveloped and this week Patisserie Valerie opened in its place.

The launch of Patisserie Valerie, which also opened a branch in Hammersmith this summer, brings the number of coffee shops and cafes around the Broadway to ten, and this could soon rise to 11 if a planning application by La Petite Bretagne to open on the ground floor of the Chelsea Reach development in Vanston Place gets the go ahead.

This month also saw the launch of "beer focused" restaurant Wahleeah around the corner from the Broadway at 18 Farm Lane.

The restaurant is named after an old Brooklyn slang term "wallear" meaning to have a craving for a certain type of food and co-founder, chef Dave Ahern says: "It is my belief that British food tastes developed along side British tastes for beer and not wine."
