A new exhibition coming to Fulham Palace will feature the work of lettering artists depicting ‘The Nereids’, goddesses of antiquity who nurtured the maritime environment.

There are some 30 pieces brought together by The Lettering Arts Trust including intricately carved stone and wood; calligraphy and letterpress.

In classical Greece and Roman times there were between 50 and 100 Nereids, each with her own power and beneficial influence over the waves, the vessels, the harbours, the sailors and the fish. The artists have responded to the theme by creating individual nereids which hang together as a unified sisterhood.

The Nereids is a free exhibition which runs from Wednesday 30 April to Sunday 1 June and is open seven days a week from 10:30am to 4pm.

On Thursday 15 May at 5.40pm, as part of London Craft Week, the Lettering Arts Trust will give a talk entitled ‘London’s Lettered Landmarks’ which will encourage people to look up and see the multitude of inscriptions on buildings, monuments and in some rather unusual places.

There is a letter carving demonstration on Sunday 18 May which will provide a chance to see a letter carver at work as Imogen Long demonstrates the skills she honed as a result of a Journeyman placement with the Lettering Arts Trust. She will be in the garden from 11am to 3pm, using the traditional tools that have not changed for millennia - chisels and dummies - to carve an inscription.

The Nereids at Fulham Palace coincides with London Craft Week (12 to 18 May). This is a city-wide festival celebrating exceptional craftsmanship, across multiple sectors and disciplines, from around the world. Across London there will be exhibitions, talks and workshops showcasing numerous craft skills and artistry.

Karoline Newman, the curator for “The Nereids” said, “The Lettering Arts Trust has curated the ‘The Nereids’ to highlight the hard-won skills of artists who turn lettering into an artform, and to demonstrate the heritage craft of hand lettering carving. The exhibition coincides with London Craft Week. We look forward to welcoming lots of visitors from South West London, and hope they will be surprised and delighted to see what can be achieved when this age-old yet contemporary craft takes inspiration from the classics and reinterprets it. There are works by Masters of the form displayed alongside emerging talent. This lovely show is a fusion of tradition and modernity.”

As part of its ambition to sustain the craft of hand letter cutting, the Lettering Arts Trust supports the training of the next generation of artists with apprenticeships and journeyman opportunities.

All of the works presented in ‘The Nereids are for sale with prices ranging from £800 - £3500., and further commissions can also be undertaken by artists represented by the Lettering Arts Trust. Proceeds from the sale of works and commissions contribute to the Lettering Arts Trust’s education programme which teaches the next generation of lettering artists.

Fulham Palace is at Bishop’s Avenue, (SW6 6EA).
