Two camera which are part of the South Fulham Clean Air Neighbourhood enforcement system, are being credited with breaking a national record for the number of fines issued in a single day.
The Daily Telegraph obtained data on the number of PCNs given out under the scheme during 2024 through a Freedom of Information request.
This shows that on Sunday 12 May last year, 851 fines were issued by the camera at the north west corner of Imperial Road near New Kings Road. The report says that it is believed this is the highest ever number of finds handed out by a single CCTV device in Britain within a 24-hour period.
In second place came the camera on the south east corner of the same road which caught 733 drivers breaching access restrictions on Friday 14 June.
Surges in fines were observed on hot summer days and busy shopping times such as the run up to Christmas.
These were exceptional days as overall, the 23 cameras which monitor access to the area issued an average of 290 PCNs a day. The face value of these 212,615 tickets over 2024 would be £27million but the £130 charge is reduced to £65 if paid within 14 days.
The restrictions are meant to prevent out-of-borough drivers using certain roads in the area.
Local Conservative council Jose Alfonso is quoted by the Telegraph as saying, "When the South Fulham traffic schemes were introduced, we were clear about the detrimental impact they would have on business.
"These record fines during peak periods throughout the year will only lead to people not wanting to enjoy our fantastic and unique local businesses. Wandsworth Bridge Road and the New Kings Road used to be destination shopping locations. Under Labour, they are becoming no-go areas for those in neighbouring boroughs."
In response to the report a spokesperson for the council said, "The number of fines issued for driving through our Clean Air Neighbourhood tumbled yet again last year as more and more drivers changed their behaviour to comply with the cameras.
"This demonstrates the ongoing success of a project which sees 15,000 fewer cars a day from outside the borough using our residential streets as commuter cut-throughs."
Offending motorists are spotted with a network of 23 cameras issuing an average of 290 PCNs per day, which stand at £130 per offence.
