Hammersmith & Fulham Council has installed a new camera on Fulham’s Clancarty Road to try and stop motorists using it as a cut through to Wandsworth Bridge Road.

The council says the road is experiencing increased traffic and congestion because satnavs are directing cars to use it, and this trial of a Clean Air Neighbourhood enforcement camera is in response to requests from local residents.

Clancarty Road is a busy road for families and children, as it includes two entrances to South Park and both a primary and secondary school within the Lycee L'Ecole Marie D'Orliac. The new camera has been installed to the west of the school building.

The trial went live on Monday, October 21 and the council says for the first three weeks, non Hammersmith & Fulham residents (who don't have a Visitor or Business Permit to drive through the camera) will receive a warning notice.

After that they will be fined.

The council adds that residents with vehicles registered in H&F can go through the camera.

This new measure is the latest development in H&F Council’s long term plan for the South Fulham Clean Air Neighbourhood, in two areas to the east and west of Wandsworth Bridge Road.

After extensive trials, the East scheme was made permanent in December 2021, and the West scheme in March 2024.

The council says its data shows that 15,000 fewer cars per days are using residential streets as cut-throughs in South Fulham.

The council says there has been an increase in traffic going past local schools including The Lycee

The Clean Air Neighbourhood, or CAN has been welcomed by the members of Peterborough Road and Area Residents Association, or PRARA. They say “ The CAN has resulted in a welcome improvement to the air and safety on local roads including a decrease in traffic, pollution, road rage, car damage and noise pollution. Since the implementation of the plan, local traffic has reduced significantly making our local area a more pleasant place to live.”

This latest trial will last for up to 18 months.
