As vital flood defence works continue at Swan Draw Dock, local residents are being invited to help shape the future of this historic riverside site through a public drop-in session on Wednesday 1 October. Organised by the Environment Agency, the event aims to gather feedback on environmental enhancements that aim to transform the dock into a more vibrant and informative public space.

Located just 100 metres east of Putney Bridge on the northern shore of the Thames, Swan Draw Dock is considered one of Fulham’s hidden treasures. Originally built in the late Victorian era, the dock plays a crucial role in protecting the surrounding community from tidal flooding. However, its eastern and northern walls have reached the end of their serviceable life and are now undergoing extensive repairs as part of a two-year project scheduled to conclude in March 2027.

The refurbishment is being carried out by the Environment Agency in partnership with Balfour Beatty, and forms part of the wider Thames Estuary 2100 Programme. This initiative is designed to ensure that tidal walls, embankments, and barriers along the Thames Estuary continue to safeguard 1.4 million people and £321 billion worth of property from future flooding.

While the project is essential for long-term resilience, it has caused temporary disruption. The footbridge over Swan Draw Dock was closed by Hammersmith and Fulham Council due to health and safety concerns and will remain shut for the duration of the works. Diversions have been put in place along the Thames Path, and traffic restrictions have been introduced on Willow Bank and Carrara Wharf to accommodate construction activity.

Despite these inconveniences, the project presents an opportunity to enhance the dockside and riverside areas. Proposed improvements include information boards celebrating local history, a specially commissioned mural, and increased greenery around Swan Wharf. These ideas will be discussed at the upcoming drop-in session, which takes place at CAS Halls, 18b Parsons Green SW6 4TS, from 6pm to 8pm.

“This is a chance for the community to help shape the future of a site that’s both historically significant and environmentally vital,” said Howard, a local advocate for the project. “Swan Draw Dock is perhaps one of the hidden treasures of Fulham. Any questions – just send me an email.”

The Environment Agency has committed to ongoing engagement with residents through newsletters and drop-in events, and encourages locals to subscribe for updates or share feedback via SwanDrawDock@Environment-Agency.gov.uk.
