December has seen a surge of new restaurants and cafes opening across Fulham, offering cuisines from countries including Italy, Greece, Argentina, Lebanon and Thailand.

Fans of Thai restaurant Poppy’s II who were dismayed to see it close its long established home in Greyhound Road will be delighted to discover it has now reopened in a new location at 175 New Kings Road in Parsons Green.

Fans old and new will be equally delighted to see the new launch has retained the two elements that made Poppy’s, which also has three restaurants in Hammersmith, so popular - its flamboyant interior, including chandeliers, antiques and stuffed animals and its exceptionally reasonable prices, with main courses, including favourite such as Pad Thai, Satay and Red, Yellow and Jungle Curries priced under £10.

Further east at 24a New Kings Road, Beit El Zaytoun has taken over the restaurant on the corner of Eel Brook Common, promising indoor/outdoor seating overlooking the common with eclectic, countryside interiors and a menu of classic Lebanese dishes.

This is the second branch of Beit El Zaytoun alongside the successful original in Park Royal, and founder Ayman Assi says it offers a stylish “resto-café” atmosphere with its signature mezze and grills and weekly live oud performances.

At 585 Fulham Road, seafood restaurant and aperitivo bar Fish & Bubbles is now open. It comes from Peppe and Angelo Corsaro, the brothers behind Chelsea’s La Mia Mamma (a favourite of actor and writer Stanley Tucci) and its menu promises creative fish pairings with the best Italian bubbles.

Among its specialities are a raw fish counter, tapas, Panino di Mare and Frito Misto Al Metro - seafood and fried fish served on a giant wooden board - and to wash it down, sea water infused Negroni. There is also a special menu planned for New Year’s Eve.

Around the corner are two welcome reopenings. At 453 North End Road, opposite Waitrose and next door to Ethiopian restaurant Abugida, Greek kitchen Grill 4 All has opened its doors with a new name, an updated interior an all day menu of Breakfast, Lunch and Dinner with all the dishes you would expect in a Greek taverna.

Thai and Oriental restaurant Fat Thai Grill has also opened under new ownership at 5 Dawes Road, offering a comprehensive menu of curries, salads and noodles for collection or delivery.

Mr Steak on Fulham Palace Road has proved so popular, a second branch has now opened at 606 Fulham Road, offering the same unusual signature menu. It includes the Tirata de Ancho, a classic Argentinian rib-eye steak marinated in Provencal sauce; Trust Me, It is Gold, a fillet adorned with 24 carat edible gold and Leave It To Me, described as a feast for two, featuring three 250g steak cuts (rib-eye, sirloin and fillet), half lobster, and Argentinian king prawns.

Cafes and coffee shops are also thriving in Fulham, with two brand new launches. The BAE (Before Anything Else) Bakery has opened at 1-3 Michael Road, just south of Kings Road and opposite Kings Road Park, St William’s vast redevelopment of the former Fulham Gasworks.

As well as coffee and sandwiches, the new family run venture offers some unusual Turkish inspired sweet and savoury pastries and cakes and is already bustling just one week after opening.

At 653 Fulham Road, just west of the Broadway, The Civet House is a new corner cafe providing a range of speciality coffees, plus for warmer days, a signature menu of cold drinks including strawberry or blueberry matcha and iced charcoal or pandan latte. The food menu includes brunch and a range of Mediterranean inspired sandwiches.

Two large chains have also recently opened new branches in Fulham. Burger chain Wendy’s has now opened its latest restaurant on the site om Fulham Broadway which was formerly home to Thai Square and Pret a Manger has launched a third local cafe on Parsons Green Lane, opposite the tube station.

This new addition to Fulham's booming coffee scene is set to compete for customers with a number of popular independent cafes along Parsons Green Lane, including District, Naive and Rondor Coffee, just off the lane in Heathman’s Road, as well as nearby branches of Megan's and Ollie's House.
