People entering the new Lidl store
September 16, 2024
Shoppers in Fulham’s North End Road have been flocking to Lidl, after the budget supermarket’s long awaited launch last Thursday, 12 September.
The discount supermarket has taken over premises at 254 - 258 North End Road, which were previously home to a Co-op store until it closed a year ago.
In what it says is a multi-million pound investment, the new Lidl has created around 40 local jobs and includes the chain’s favourite features including an in-house bakery and its Middle of Lidl aisle with its ever changing range of products “you never knew you needed”.
Ahead of the launch, Grant Shulton, regional head of property at Lidl GB, said: "We have seen demand for our best-value products continue to grow in the capital, so we can’t wait to open our first Fulham store.
"Not only will it deliver more high-paying jobs for those living in the area, but it will also provide even better access to our award-winning products. We would like to thank all those who have played a part in delivering this new store and look forward to welcoming customers through the doors in the coming weeks."
Lidl’s Fulham plans were initially controversial, as they did not include the Post Office counter which had been sited at the back of the Co-op. However, this problem has now been solved with the recent opening of a separate Post Office on the opposite side of North End Road.
Lidl becomes the second supermarket in this section of North End Road south of Lillie Road, alongside Iceland and the third in the borough along with stores in Hammersmith’s Livat shopping centre and the W12 Centre in Shepherd’s Bush.
As we reported last month, it will soon be joined in by a second budget supermarket, as rival chain Aldi has taken a 20 year lease on the former home of the sadly missed Wilko within Fulham Broadway shopping centre. Though the window displays are announcing that the store is coming soon, no definite dates have yet been announced.
