Budget supermarket Lidl is planning to open in Fulham, taking over the site at 254 - 258 North End Road which is currently home to Co-op Food.

A planning application submitted to H&F Council reads as follows:

Alterations to the north eastern elevation to include, installation of a new shopfront to replace existing, installation of new high level insulated composite metal fascia cladding following the removal of existing fascia cladding and signage, bringing forward the front entrance/exit doors to align with the proposed shopfront, rendering front facade; replacement of an existing door with a new door to the north western elevation; alterations to fenestrations and external facade to the south eastern elevation to include, installation of new delivery bay door and drivers door to replace existing; formation of a new door opening, installation of new fire exit door, bricking up 3no. existing fire exit doors to the south western elevation at ground floor level.

An accompanying drawing shows the proposed new shopfront.

It has been submitted on Lidl's behalf by specialist planning and development consultants Walsingham Planning, who say, "The proposals will modernise the existing use and improve the overall shopping experience for consumers."

If the plans are approved, this will be Lidl's third supermarket in the borough, adding to branches open in Livat in Hammersmith's King Street and the W12 Shopping Centre in Shepherd's Bush.

Co-op Food has not yet revealed its future plans, but it does have a number of relatively close smaller branches, at locations including Lillie and Munster Roads and further up North End Road.

However, one major concern for local people is that the new plans do not appear to include the post office counter which is currently at the rear of the Co-op store.

If it was removed, the nearest services would be small counters within convenience shops in Dawes Road and Fulham Broadway. As we reported earlier this month, a further branch is relocating from Fulham Palace Road to a convenience store in Munster Road from June 10. You can see the details here.

We have asked the Post Office about their future plans in North End Road. In the meantime, local people are invited to give their views on services in the area by visiting the consultation online at postofficeviews.co.uk and entering the branch code 143006 before 9 June..

Submissions can also be made via email to comments@postoffice.co.uk, by post to Freepost YOUR COMMENTS, or by telephone 03452 66 01 15 or Textphone 03457 22 33 55.

Lidl's planning application and accompanying drawings and documents can be seen here. It is currently open for comments while H&F Council considers its decision.
