Fulham is soon to have two new budget supermarkets, with Aldi revealing this week it is taking over the former home of Wilko on the ground floor of Fulham Broadway shopping centre.

The news comes as Aldi’s main rival Lidl is preparing to launch its new store in nearby North End Road.

Aldi signed a 20 year lease for the unit in February this year, six months after the closure of the much missed Wilko. At the time, the shopping centre’s owner CBRE IM said there had been “ strong interest” from other parties for the unit before it chose Aldi, who it said planned to open the store later this year.

Louisa Butters, Head of Retail Asset Management UK at CBRE IM said: “Aldi is one of the biggest supermarkets in the UK and its new store at Fulham Broadway reflects our strategy to ensure that our proposition is relevant to our consumer needs. We believe Aldi is an excellent addition to our retail mix and we look forward to welcoming them.”

Aldi is now putting its plan into action, by moving in last week to strip out the remaining Wilko fittings and advertise its imminent arrival with window displays saying Coming Soon!

Aldi will become the second supermarket within the shopping centre, alongside Sainsbury’s. This follows a similar pattern to Hammersmith’s Livat Centre, which has both a Sainsbury’s and a branch of Lidl.

In North End Road meanwhile, Lidl is now fitting out its long awaited new store on the site formerly used by the Co-op and though the chain has not yet announced an opening date, it is expected within weeks.

Lidl says refurbishing the site has been a multi-million-pound investment and 40 staff have already been recruited. The new store will include an in-house bakery.

Earlier this year, Grant Shulton, Regional Head of Property for Lidl GB, said, “After all the support we’ve received from members of the community, it’s exciting to be able to share that we are one step closer to opening the doors to our Fulham store.

“We have a clear commitment to providing shoppers with the very best value, and after becoming the third-largest supermarket in London it really reinforces our dedication to ensuring that everyone can eat affordable, high-quality food, no matter where they live.”

Lidl has continued to expand in the capital, claiming that it has invested £500million in the area. It now has a 9.1% share of supermarket sales and overtook Aldi to become the third largest retailer in London last year.

The two rival supermarkets will now be going head to head in Fulham’s town centre.
