Wayne the Crane Arrives at Chelsea and Westminster

To enable the expansion and redevelopment of intensive care units

The crane, which is enabling the expansion and redevelopment of the intensive care units at the hospital is now on site and has started work.

The hospital recently ran a competition to 'name the crane' and says it is delighted to announce that the crane has been officially christened Wayne.

Richard Jackson, Corporate Nursing Quality Improvement Lead at Chelsea and Westminster Hospital NHS Foundation Trust, was the winner of the fun competition.

Richard, pictured above said: "I am very proud to have named Wayne the Crane. It’s obviously a very crane like name and I’m excited to see the improvements to our Critical Care Services Wayne will help to make."

Richard's prize was the in the photo and he has kindly donated it to the children's wards.

The hospital says that the current intensive care units at the hospital are too small to meet the increased demand. Wayne the Crane will help it deliver the significant expansion and redevelopment which will:

- Increase the capacity of the adult ICU by 45%, enabling the hospital to care for an additional 500 patients per annum.

- Transform the outdated NICU facility, increasing the space by 40% and installing additional cots so that it can provide life-saving care to 150 more babies every year, as well as providing better clinical space and family facilities.

- Create a patient-focused environment which will transform Chelsea and Westminster's care and patient experience. This innovative, new model of care and world-class environment will improve clinical outcomes, reduce costs, improve efficiency and reduce risks for patients. It will become one of the leading Critical Care services in the UK, influencing NHS guidelines and best practice nationally and beyond.

The full cost of this expansion and redevelopment will be approximately £20 million. The Trust has committed £10 million towards the project and initiated a campaign to raise the remaining £10 million to enable these new facilities to be fully operational by 2020.
