Join Science and Sport Day in White City on Saturday
Imperial College teams up with QPR for free fun-filled festival
Head for South Africa Road in White City on Saturday for a free, fun-filled festival of sport, music, food and drink which aims to give our local community the chance to see how the future of sport is being changed by science.
Find out the answers to many intriguing questions such as:
How fast does a football travel? What are sugary sports drinks really made of? What will the racing bikes and sports wheelchairs of the future look like?
Imperial College London is joining forces with Queen’s Park Rangers Football Club on its annual Community Day to host Science and Sport Day.
The event will also offer the chance to train with QPR coaches and footballers, and work with scientists from one of the world’s top-ranked universities to explore new sporting discoveries.
Other activities on offer include testing visitors’ boxing skills
with new smart electronic gloves, and lung power with the latest medical instruments, racing drones around a unique obstacle course arena, and even trying out water-purifying bicycles.
Professor Maggie Dallman, Associate Provost at Imperial, says: "Science affects every part of our day-to-day lives and sport is no exception. This event is a great chance for Imperial and the community to work together and discover more about how science is shaping the future of the sports we all play and enjoy."
The Science and Sport Day will be held at PlayFootball on South Africa Road in White City from 11.30am until 2.30pm. It is being organised as part of Imperial’s annual Fringe series of public events, which aim to explore the livelier side of science.
The Fringe opens up the College’s ground-breaking research to everyone through topical talks, interactive science and hands-on demonstrations.
Imperial is already very active in the local community, while it develops a major new campus in White City. As well as providing a new home for Imperial staff and students, the campus will create new opportunities for collaboration with the local community, other leading institutions and businesses of all sizes.
In January, the College announced that it is developing The Invention Rooms, a new community engagement space on Wood Lane, which will open later in 2017.
