Hammersmith & Fulham's GCSE students have plenty of reasons to celebrate after producing an outstanding set of exam results.

Out of the borough’s 1,126 pupils who took the exams, 62% achieved at least five passes graded between A* to C. This is expected to be significantly higher than the national average which last year was 53%.

Councillor Sue Macmillan, Cabinet Member for Children and Education, said: "Congratulations to everyone involved in achieving these terrific results.

" We know pupils and their teachers have worked very hard for these grades. I am incredibly proud of the fantastic schools in Hammersmith and Fulham and the results they are supporting our young residents to achieve."

Among the star performers was Phoenix High School pupil Cheryl Wamunyima, 16, who moved to the UK from Zambia when she was just five years old and has now set her sights on a degree in science.

She was thrilled to discover she had A grades in biology, chemistry, physics, computer science, history and psychology and Bs in English language, maths and English literature.

Cheryl said: " I had a lot of high and low points for sure. There were times when I was just working so hard I would just break down and I thought I can't do this and I had to get my aunty to come in and help."

There was relief for Chiyinde Lewis-Shiell, who gained six A*s and three As in his GCSEs plus a merit for his BTEC in ICT after his hard work at Fulham College Boys' School paid off.

The 16 year-old, who lives in Australia Road in White City , said: " I’m speechless. I’m really surprised. I wasn’t expecting six A*s. Some of the exams were really tough."

Ali Chaudhry, 16, of East Acton, was the first person in Burlington Danes Academy’s history to score 100 % in both his RE papers.

Ali's impressive grades included A*s in RE, geography, biology, chemistry, physics, English language, English literature, maths and further maths and As in economics and history.

He aced an interview and test at Harris Westminster College and is looking forward to studying biology, chemistry, maths and economics before embarking on a degree.

And it wasn’t just GCSE students celebrating. Students at Fulham Enterprise Studio in Kingwood Road also had cause to celebrate with another year of 100% pass rates in the specialist vocational subjects of construction and performing arts.
