Two women had to be rescued by firefighters wearing breathing apparatus after a fire broke out in a flat on Fulham Palace Road.
The blaze took hold shortly before 2:18am on Tuesday (17 October) on a balcony outside the flat. Two fire engines and around 10 firefighters from Fulham and Hammersmith fire stations attended the scene.
Fire escape hoods were also used during the rescue. These provide members of the public with up to 15 minutes protection from four of the main fire gases (carbon monoxide, hydrogen cyanide, hydrogen chloride and acrolein) and can be worn by conscious or unconscious people. If more than 15 minutes protection is required, then another hood can be given to each wearer. They do not provide oxygen but temporarily filter toxic smoke to make breathing easier.
The fire was under control within an hour and there were no reports of any injuries.
The cause of the fire is under investigation by the Brigade and the Metropolitan Police Service.
