Police who have launched a murder investigation say the victim of the attack in Lanfrey Place was 17 years old.

Officers believe they know the identity of the victim, but he is not yet being named as formal identification awaits. Police say his family are aware.

Police were called at 2.14pm yesterday, Thursday, 7 March to Lanfrey Place, next to the Waitrose store, to reports that a person had been stabbed.

Officers, London Ambulance Service and London’s Air Ambulance attended the scene.

The victim was found with stab injuries to the chest and taken to a central London hospital, but he sadly died a short time later.

Police say a post-mortem examination will take place in due course.

Detectives from the Homicide and Major Crime Command are investigating and say their enquiries continue.

Police have also announced the implementation a Section 60 Authority between the hours of 4.44pm and 4am across the north areas of Westminster and Kensington & Chelsea and most of Hammersmith & Fulham.

A Section 60 Criminal Justice and Public Order Act 1994 (s.60) gives police the right to search people in a defined area during a specific time period when they believe, with good reason, that: serious violence will take place and it is necessary to use this power to prevent such violence; or that a person is carrying a dangerous object or offensive weapon; or that an incident involving serious violence has taken place and a dangerous instrument or offensive weapon used in the incident is being carried in the locality.

Similar powers have also been implemented in nearby Chiswick and Acton.

Chief Superintendent Rob Jones, Central West Area Commander said: " I understand the devastating effect that this incident will have not only on the victim’s loved ones, but also on the wider community.

" Our thoughts are with the victim’s family at this sad time.

" A crime scene remains at Lanfrey Place, and our colleagues from the Homicide and Major Crime Command are investigating.

" There will be a heightened visible police presence in the area and local officers will also be supported by central specialist units to prevent any potential further incidents.

" Violent crime is a priority and the police, our partners and the public must continue to work together to deal with knife crime and prevent further young lives being lost.

" We can’t combat knife crime alone, as a community we all have a vital role to play in tackling violent crime.

" We need to hear from anyone who has information that could either detect or prevent crime. Your information could save a life."
