Lady Margaret Given Go Ahead to Add Nine Extra Classrooms
Allowing popular Fulham girls' school to increase capacity to 800
Hammersmith and Fulham Council's planning application committee has given the go ahead to Lady Margaret School in Parsons Green to add an extra nine classrooms that would increase the popular girls’ school’s capacity from 710 pupils to 800.
Approval was granted at a committee meeting on May 8 after a positive recommendation by the planning officer who said " The proposal would contribute a valuable community facility which meets an identified educational need.
"The increase in the capacity of the existing Lady Margaret School would enhance the provision of secondary school places within the borough".
The application, made in December last year is for the following: " Erection of a single storey glazed entrance building with setback first floor and associated terrace with door to replace existing window at second floor level to Henniker House following demolition of existing two storey building to the elevation fronting Parsons Green; alterations to front boundary including disability access, provision of parking and cycle bays, and associated landscaping; internal alterations and refurbishment of Henniker House, Belfield House and Elm House; erection of a part two, part three storey extension to existing assembly hall and Block B; erection of link building between Block B and Block C at first floor level; erection of fire escape to Block B."
Lady Margaret is one of Hammersmith and Fulham's most popular schools, with pupils consistently achieving some of the highest marks in the borough. The latest Ofsted report, and the Statutory Inspection Anglican Schools both judged it to be "outstanding".
This application was one of a range decided by the committee at the meeting. Others included approval for two extra floors to be added to Westfield Shopping Centre in Shepherd's Bush, providing extra retail space and a new children's centre called Kidzania, which between them will create 400 jobs.
However, plans to redevelop the former Nomis Studios in Sinclair Road, Olympia, where stars such as Tina Turner and Dire Straits have recorded, were refused by the committee.
They were deemed an "overdevelopment of the site" by the council’s planning officers. Developer Regal Sinclair Road LLP had applied to demolish the existing buildings on the site and replace them with 52 flats.
