New crime stats show mixed picture for local area
New crime statistics for the area present a mixed picture for the Acton area with burglary and robbery on the increase but other crimes like criminal damage and theft falling.
Ward by ward data has been released and it shows that robbery was up by over 40% over the year to September 2005 in East and South Acton. Burglary was up by over 30% in Acton Central and South Acton. The rise was less in East Acton but the area has a burglary rate that is twice the London average.
For the borough of Ealing as a whole crime was down 1.9% against 3.9% for the Metropolitan Police district as a whole. However violent crime is still on the increase in the borough with a rise of 8.7% over the year. New reporting methods are believed to explain the apparent rise in crime and police spokespersons in other boroughs are adamant that the underlying trend is down.
The statistics as yet provide little indication as to the success of the Safer Neighbourhoods scheme which has provided enhanced police resources for the East Acton and South Acton wards. As these schemes were instituted during the year in question it is probably too early to reach a conclusion as to their effectiveness.
We have asked the police for detailed comment on these figures and will publish them if they respond.
