Thames Explorer Trust founder Alison Taylor with trust director Simon Clarke
February 28, 2025
Chiswick-based environmental charity, Thames Explorer Trust, is seeking to increase the number of members of its trustee board.
The award-winning organisation wants to find three people who can help steer its future and support a small team of staff.
The role is voluntary, but the Trust says that the time required is not great and can vary according to how far a board member wishes to become involved. The minimum commitment, however, is to attend 4 board meetings a year.
From its headquarters at Pier House on Corney Reach Way on the banks of the Thames, it runs learning programmes that get people out onto the foreshore to engage hands-on with the history, ecology and geography of the UK’s most famous river.
It has over 30 years’ experience running fieldwork programmes that meet National Curriculum objectives in geography, history, science, art and citizenship in a truly memorable way.
The Trust was set up as an educational charity in 1988 by a group of people concerned for the future of the Thames. From small beginnings, the organisation has grown, establishing itself as an expert in Thames-related matters. Its team currently includes Simon Clarke, the Trust Director, Heather Hyams , Trust Manager, Sam Mills Trust Officer/Project Manager and a group of highly experienced freelance teachers.
The ideal candidate would have experience of working with another charity as a trustee or as a member of staff. Skills that would be considered relevant are a background in fundraising, education, legal, financial, HR as well as marketing and social media expertise.
A good knowledge of the Thames either from a historical or scientific perspective would also be an asset.
A board member would be responsible for ensuring that the charity fulfils the objectives set out in its constitution and adheres to relevant legislation.

Applications should be submitted via e-mail to simon@thames-explorer.org.uk before the closing date: 9am Monday 17 March.
Shortlisted candidates will be invited to interview via e-mail.
