Summer Screen Launches at Television Centre and White City Place

Offering 12 weeks of free art, culture and sports on giant outdoor screens

Television Centre, the former home of the BBC and White City Place, the former BBC media village, are teaming up to launch Summer Screen - 12 weeks of art, culture and sports on giant outdoor screens.

The free events, with highlights including live screenings from Electric Cinema, Royal Opera House and Wimbledon, will run from this week right through till Sunday 2 September, between 11am and 10pm.

This week's first screenings include tennis from the Queen's Club at Television Centre, and the Tom Hanks classic film Big on Thursday 21 June, and sports including Royal Ascot, England vs. South Africa rugby, England vs. Australia cricket and the French Grand Prix at White City Place.

Each Saturday at Television Centre, Electric Cinema will present TV DINNERS, a carefully-curated selection of films celebrating and exploring cultural phenomena, pivotal moments and pioneering figures.

A separate film schedule will be showcased every Wednesday, featuring Dogtown and Z-Boys, a documentary exploring the birth of modern skateboarding; Exit Through the Gift Shop, the ground-breaking film from Banksy; and Prince’s Sign 'O' the Times, deemed the greatest live performance in film.

Television Centre will also be bringing two acclaimed productions from the Royal Opera House to its iconic forecourt this summer, La Bohème on Tuesday 26 June and Don Giovanni on Thursday 12 July.

100 metres up Wood Lane, White City Place will be screening major live sporting events, including all the action from the US Open, Tour de France, European Athletics Championships and Wimbledon.

Wimbledon will also be shown at Television Centre, with Bluebird Café serving a tennis themed cocktail called The Court and Homeslice and Patty & Bun operating pop-up stalls serving food and drinks to visitors.

The newly announced programme at White City Place will also offer the chance to catch 30th-anniversary screenings of cult classics, including Big, Die Hard and Beetlejuice.

At Television Centre, a host of distinguished guest curators from the creative industries have been offered a platform to showcase works across art, animation, graphic design, photography, theatre and performance.

The programme offers the opportunity for them to reflect on the theme of culture, bringing cutting-edge creative talent to one of the most iconic and pioneering cultural destinations in London.

The notable selection includes Encounters Short Film Festival, this year’s shortlist feature the representation of Deafness not as the main form of conflict but as part of a wider narrative; YOUTHCLUB, a not-for-profit organisation working to preserve, share, educate and celebrate youth culture history through a passionate network of photographers and creatives; Girls In Film, a network championing the new generation of female filmmakers worldwide and Daydreaming with…UNKLE, a collaboration of some of the most pivotal pioneers of British electronic music led by James Lavelle, one of Britain's most influential artists.
