Pupils' environmental plans win school bronze accreditation

Plans put in place by The Godolphin and Latymer School's Green Team have won the school Bronze Sustainable Level accreditation from Hammersmith and Fulham Council and Transport for London.

This accreditation is given to organisations for sustainability and environmental credentials.

Pupils from the Green Team developed a travel plan to substantially decrease the number of cars travelling to and from the school and to encourage more staff and pupils to walk, cycle or take public transport.

The pupils undertook research in the form of a questionnaire on pupil travel modes, preferred travel modes and obstacles to sustainable travel. The results were then reviewed and actions and targets set.

As well as the travel plan, the school recently increased the number of bike racks it has to 66, to accommodate the growing number of pupils and staff who cycle to school.

The school also operates a cycle to work scheme, where staff can purchase a bike exempt from income tax, national insurance and VAT.

Senior Teacher Mr Toby Seth says: " The school is proud to have achieved this level and will continue to work towards achieving silver accreditation. It is a testament to the girls and staff at the school who have supported the initiative and who cycle and walk to school wherever possible, whatever the weather."
