Public speaking team receive awards from Duke of Edinburgh

Three champion public speakers from Godolphin and Latymer School were among award winners invited to Buckingham Palace on Thursday, November 12

Kitty Parker-Brooks, Daniela Raffel and Francesca Humphreys made up the winning team in the finals of the English Speaking Union's National Schools Public Speaking Competition.

The girl were presented with certificates by the Duke of Edinburgh, is President of the ESU.

The team, who were all in the Upper Fifth at the time of their victory had won two regional rounds before reaching the competition's National Final at the City of London School on April 25.

The final featured nine teams from schools across Britain including Oundle, Magdalen College, George Herriot’s and Central Newcastle High School.

The topics which the main speakers chose to address, including Personal tragedies should not be
played out in front of the media and Barack
Obama will be the saviour of America, leant
themselves to lively, incisive questioning.

The judges, Trevor Phillips, Roger Tilbury and Sarah Harrison emphasised how difficult their decision had been, due to the very high standard, but the Godolphin team were judged the winners because of their confidence and self-assurance and for how well each of the girls fulfilled their roles as roles as main speaker, questioner and chair respectively.

The Godolphin and Latymer School has a long history of success in public speaking and debate. The Friends of Godolphin and Latymer hold a thriving series of Public Lectures each year which are open to local residents and the public.

In 2010, the School will build on this by hosting its Inaugural Arts Festival entitled Past,
Present and Future from February 22 to 26.
