Fulham Resident Mollie Cuts the Ribbon at New Sainsbury's Store

Riverside supermarket offers food, clothing, cafe, homewares and onsite dentist

Fulham resident and veteran shopper Mollie McCartney helped to cut the ribbon at the opening of Sainsbury's new superstore at Fulham Wharf yesterday, May 13.

Mollie, pictured here with the store's Edward Collet, Christine Campbell and manager Leigh Brown has shopped for the last 30 years at the old supermarket on Townmead Road which closed on Tuesday and will now be demolished.

The new 72,000 foot supermarket is twice the size of the previous store. It employs 384 people, including people who have transferred from the old store and 98 new staff recruited locally during the last few months.

The two floor store has a customer café on the mezzanine floor and sells a wide range of non-food items including the TU clothing range, kitchen and homewares and electricals.

There is also an onsite Centre for Dentistry practice, which it says will provide a more accessible service in a less intimidating environment with extended opening hours in the evenings and at weekends.

The practice has a fully qualified dental team and options for cosmetic dentistry such as teeth whitening.

The underground car park meanwhile includes Pod Points for recharging electric cars.

Like the previous store, the supermarket aims to have strong community involvement, supporting a local charity as well at Hammersmith and Fulham Foodbank.

The new supermarket is a joint initiative with Barratt London which will eventually see over 460 new homes built on the site. Over half have now been built and a second phase of 196 new homes will be completed late next year on the site of the old Sainsbury's store, which had been open since the early eighties.

The site will also include public open space including an extension of the river walk.

This is the company's fifth store in Fulham, alongside its town centre store on Fulham Broadway and three convenience stores.  In January it opened its latest convenience store just a few hundred yards from the new superstore on Wandsworth Bridge Road.

The new supermarket is open from 7am to 10pm on Monday to Saturday, and from 10am to 4pm on Sundays.

Leigh Brown, manager of the store says: "We’re delighted the store is open and  I know it will provide a fantastic shopping experience for the local community."
