Fulham Road Gas Works Altered to Allow for Ridelondon

Work on second phase postponed till after cycling event on 30 July

Cadent, which is the new name for National Grid Gas Distribution, has been replacing and upgrading old metal gas mains with new pipes on Fulham Road, which has meant the closure of the westbound lane and the use of temporary traffic lights and bus stops.

Now in a letter sent to local residents, Cadent's Engineering Manager Stuart Donaldson says:
"Our work is progressing well and we are on schedule to complete it by the end of September 2017. The current phase of work, between Gunter Grove and Chelsea and Westminster Hospital, which uses temporary traffic signals, is due to be completed week commencing 17 July 2017.

"The next phase of work, between the hospital and Beaufort Street, which involves the closureof the westbound carriageway of Fulham Road, was going to follow on from this.

"However, after a series of discussions with Transport for London, London Buses, the Royal Borough of Kensington and Chelsea and organisers of the RideLondon annual cycling event, we have collectively agreed that it would be best if we delayed starting this phase until after the event has taken place.

"This decision has been taken to minimise disruption on the day of the event. In addition, during this period,RBKC will be taking the opportunity to accommodate other work in and around the area to minimise further disruption.

"Therefore, when we complete the current phase of work until after the RideLondon event on 30 July, we will not be working on Fulham Road so no traffic management will be in operation.

"When we return to site on 31 July, in addition to the westbound closure of Fulham Road, we will be installing temporary traffic signals in Fulham Road near the junction of Elm Park Gardens. This is a slight change to our original proposals but we are introducing this so that TfL is able to manage the traffic signals at Fulham Road and Beaufort Street more safely and efficiently while we carry out our work."

This current work forms part of a five year project to upgrade gas pipes which extended into Westminster and across the river into Wandsworth and which included work on Kings Road last year and further works this year in Parsons Green.

Cadent says that these changes do not affect the overall programme of work which is still scheduled for completion by the end of September.
