Work Begins Replacing Gas Mains on Fulham Road

Chelsea and Westminster offers advice on travel to hospital during closures

This closure, in the western edge of Chelsea extends past Chelsea and Westminster Hospital to Beaufort Street and the hospital is offering the following information for patients  and visitors:

"Gas mains replacement works have now begun outside of the St Stephen’s Centre with the existing crossing removed and replaced with temporary lights to control traffic. Please use the remaining crossing opposite Boots.

"Please note that journey times to Chelsea and Westminster Hospital will be greatly increased due to the works.

"Bus stops are suspended during this period to ease congestion. The disabled parking bays on the hospital side of Netherton Grove have been suspended.

"The hospital car park is open but the works may cause substantial queueing both in and out."

The work is being carried out by Cadent - the new name for National Grid Gas Distribution and is the latest phase of gas mains replacement following last year's work on King’s Road between Stanley Bridge and Gunter Grove, which led to the road being closed to westbound traffic for most of 2016.

Work has also been carried out further west on New King's Road, around Parsons Green.

Announcing the new phase earlier this year, National Grid said the gas mains replacement programme is crucial to providing safe and reliable energy to homes and businesses and will reduce the amount of unplanned work to repair ageing gas pipes. It will also support London’s economic growth.

It added : "Throughout the work, all shops and businesses will be open as usual and we will make every effort to minimise any inconvenience to people who work, live or travel through the area.

"We have planned this work with extensive discussions over many months with stakeholders including the emergency services, Chelsea and Westminster Hospital, Royal Borough of Kensington and Chelsea and Transport for London (TfL) traffic management and buses."
