Fulham Palace Plans £3.8 Million Restoration Project

And invites supporters and residents to view work to date at exhibition in June

The palace says following a considerable amount of research, the team including architects, surveyors and interpretation specialists has now drawn up a series of proposals for restoring and bringing back to life the Tudor Quadrangle, the Great Hall and other historic rooms and enhancing the botanical gardens.

As well as conserving the historic fabric, the project will increase visitor access to the Palace and include a new exhibition space, innovative interpretation and an enhanced learning programme which will tell the story of over 1,300 years of British history, through the personal insights of the Bishops of London.

The project will cost £3.8m and is supported by a £2m commitment from the Heritage Lottery Fund known as a Round One Pass.

The palace says: " Once we have developed our detailed plans we will submit our ‘Round Two application’ to the Heritage Lottery Fund in September 2016 and, if they award the full grant, work will start in 2017 and the restoration and interpretation will be completed by late 2018.

" A specialist team has been working on the plans for our major restoration project ‘Discovering the Bishop of London’s Palace at Fulham’ for almost a year so we’re hosting a special exhibition to share our progress. The proposed plans will be on display in Bishop Terrick’s dining room at the Palace from 13 to 19 June offering visitors a chance to find out more and share their thoughts."

The exhibition will be open 9.30am – 5pm daily, with evening openings until 7pm on 14 and 16 June. It will include drawings and plans for the restoration works, updates on the discoveries made during the research and proposals and designs for new exhibitions, interpretation and activities.

There’ll also be a chance to meet experts on 14 and 16 June (4-7pm) and 19 June (1-4pm) when you can also join a free mini-tour of the Palace to find out more about its history.

The palace website adds: " We’re really keen to hear what you think about our plans so please make a note in your diary to drop in and see us."
