Fulham Palace Opens Natural Play Area This Month
Highlight of September which also includes archeology and outdoor cinema events
Fulham Palace is officially launching a new natural play area at a special Family Fun Day celebrating The Glory of the Garden on Sunday 22 September.
This new area will use logs and wooden objects saved from previous tree work on site as a basis for natural play, encouraging families to connect with nature in a fun and enjoyable way. Children will be encouraged to interact creatively with natural materials set in a woodland area of Fulham Palace’s botanic garden.
The play area will feature carved logs and wooden structures to balance on, to climb over and under and smaller pieces of timber which children can handle and play with. The design focuses around getting hands on with nature, sparking creativity in order to encourage a lifelong love of nature for the children who use it.
Families are invited to discover the new area in the 13 acre botanic garden and see it opened for the first time with a performance of Fulham Children's Choir at 2pm on 22 September.
The free fun day, suitable for everyone aged three and up will be open from 11am till 3pm and will also offer plant themed activities, games and crafts. There will be birds of prey, live music, a caricature artist, garden games and flower crown making (using flowers and foliage from the Palace’s walled garden) and a chance to meet our dedicated garden team who keep the garden looking so good.

Thursday 12 September, 2pm - 3pm
Digging the scene: contrasts in community and commercial archaeology. Join community archaeologist Alexis Haslam as he discusses these two contrasting branches of modern archaeology including the advantages and pitfalls of each. This is free but booking is essential. Book here.
Saturday 14 September, 10.30am - 12.15pm
Young Archaeologists’ Club (YAC): Barrage balloons, for budding archaeologists aged eight to 16.
Each month YAC members investigate different themes, with activities that can range from learning to catalogue artefacts to taking part in a real archaeology dig.

Wednesday 18 September, 11am - midday
Behind the scenes: handling the museum collections. Get hands on with the hidden treasures of the palace's collection.
This free drop in event takes place in Bishop Porteus's Library.

Summer Film Series - Bohemian Rhapsody
Experience this sensational, award winning biopic about lead singer of Queen, Freddie Mercury, from the Palace’s main lawn.
Film rating 12A.
Gates open at 6pm.
This event will go ahead in all weather unless it is unsafe to do so.
Please wear appropriate clothing.
Seating is not provided unless you book a ‘premium admission’ ticket, you are welcome to bring a low backed chair or rug should you wish

Open House London. As part of Open House London Fulham Palace is running free tours, so join in to learn more about the house and garden from one of its knowledgeable guides.

Fulham Palace is also hosting an exhibition: Discovering the Bishop of London’s Palace at Fulham
The first exhibition in the palace's new museum celebrates its recent £3.8 million restoration project, revealing what was involved in this thee year programme to restore and reinterpret the Tudor courtyard and historic rooms and create new plant beds in the botanic garden.
Find out how this complex restoration project has resulted in a richer understanding of the building of Fulham Palace, how the site was used and the people who lived and worked here over the centuries.
Learn about the work carried out by the specialist conservators and craftspeople involved in the project, and the traditional methods they employed to remain faithful to those used at Fulham Palace in the past.
See many of the fascinating finds discovered during the restoration works, from artefacts uncovered through archaeology digs to a 17th century painted wall hidden behind plasterboard.
Learn about the vital role volunteers played in discovering more about Fulham Palace and the Bishops of London through carrying out an extensive archive research project and participating in archaeology digs.
The exhibition is on display until November 2020 and is open during museum opening times - 10.30am till 5pm in summer. Admission is free
