The Fulham area has seen a particularly marked rise in the number of Covid-19 infections so far this month.

In the week to 8 June there were 88 new cases in and around the SW6 postcode area more than double the previous week. 17 of these cases were in the vicinity of Fulham Broadway which now has an infection rate per 100,000 of 195.6. This is only topped by the neighbourhood designated as Munster which has a rate of 202.4.

The Fulham area appears to have a higher rate of cases than much of the rest of west and south west London although the Clapham area is currently experiencing more incidence of the virus.

The borough of Hammersmith & Fulham currently has the fourth worst infection rate out of the London Boroughs at 88.

A local GP commented, “The evidence suggests that the latest wave is driven by the Delta variant which we know is far more transmissible than even the Kent variant which struck late last year. Most of the people currently being infected are younger because they are the ones that haven’t been vaccinated yet. This is good news in the sense that hospitalisations and deaths are unlikely to hit previous peaks but if the spread continues we will see a rise particularly among older people who have chosen not to receive a vaccine.”

There was good news for Fulham from the latest data release concerning with fatalities with nobody from the area reported as having died from Covid-19 during April. Since the start of the pandemic last March 115 people from the local area have died.

The government announced this Monday (14 June) that it was postponing the planned relaxation of remaining coronavirus restrictions due to fears about the virulence of the new strain. Concerns have been expressed that social mixing during the European Championships could led to further increases. The governmetn believes an extra four weeks of controls will allow the vaccine programme to significantly limit the harm that the Delta variant can do.
