Fulham Good Neighbours is preparing to host a special in-person online banking workshop later this month for residents aged 60 and over, organised in partnership with NatWest ahead of the planned closure of the bank’s Fulham Broadway branch. The session, which will take place on Monday 30 March at Rosaline Hall, is designed to support older residents who may feel anxious about the shift to digital banking or who find it difficult to travel to alternative branches further away.
The workshop will offer practical, hands-on guidance, with NatWest staff on site to help attendees navigate the bank’s mobile app and online services. Volunteers will provide step-by-step demonstrations in a relaxed setting, and the organisers hope that the combination of small-group support, refreshments and a friendly atmosphere will make the transition to digital banking feel less daunting for those who rely on in-person services.
NatWest’s Fulham Broadway branch is scheduled to close on 18 June as part of a wider programme of branch reductions across the UK.
Banks have argued that declining footfall and the rapid growth of online and mobile banking have made many branches unsustainable. Under current regulations, banks are not legally required to keep branches open, but they do have a statutory duty to follow the Financial Conduct Authority’s rules on branch closures. These rules require banks to assess the impact on customers, consult with affected groups, and put in place alternative arrangements for vulnerable or digitally excluded customers. Banks must also publish a detailed “impact assessment” explaining why a branch is closing and what support will be offered to those who depend on face-to-face services.
In Fulham, the closure has raised concerns among older residents and those with limited mobility, many of whom prefer in-person banking or rely on staff assistance for complex transactions. Fulham Good Neighbours says the workshop is intended to help bridge that gap by giving people the confidence to manage their accounts digitally and understand the tools available to them once the branch shuts.
The event will run from 10am to 1pm at Rosaline Hall on Rosaline Road. Organisers are encouraging local groups and community networks to share the details so that as many residents as possible can benefit from the support on offer.
