Halifax in Fulham Broadway and Lloyds in North End Road - both part of the giant Lloyds Banking Group - have announced they will shut their doors in May.

These are the latest in a string of closures, following Chelsea Building Society in 2016, Santander in 2021, Nationwide Building Society in October 2023 and Barclays Bank in May last year.

They will leave Fulham with just three remaining bank branches - NatWest, HSBC and Metro Bank - all located in a cluster around the Broadway.

The shutdowns have been announced to customers through notices posted on the branches’ windows.

The Broadway branch of Halifax, which has reduced its opening hours in recent years and has looked increasingly shabby, has a notice on its front door which says: “ We’re closing this branch on 8th May, 2025.”

The notice offers advice about banking online, at a Post Office or cash machine or the nearest open branch in Kensington High Street.

A similar notice posted on the window of Lloyds’ branch at 417 North End Road says: “We’re closing this branch on 27 May, 2025.”

Along with the same advice about banking online or at a Post Office or cash machine, it points customers to the nearest open branch in Hammersmith’s King Street.

These closures are part of a plan, confirmed in January by Lloyds Banking Group, to close almost 300 branches of Lloyds, Halifax and Bank of Scotland during 2025. This leaves only around 750 branches of the three banks left across the UK.

The group said the closures are due to an increasing number of people opting to do their banking online, with over-the-counter transactions falling by as much as 50% in some of the branches set for closure.

Andrew Beverly, Campaign Director at Campaign for Cash said: “It’s very disappointing that Lloyds Banking Group continue to whittle down their branch numbers, not everyone can or indeed wants to bank online, and this is doing hollowing out communities up and down the country.”

The government is backing the future growth of banking hubs, which are shared spaces set up by Cash Access UK, a non-profit company owned by nine major banks, including Barclays, Lloyds, NatWest, HSBC and Santander.

The hubs are run by the Post Office and offer personal and business customers of all the participating banks regular banking services in a single location.

However, at the moment only a small number have been opened, with no plans as yet for Fulham, and Andrew Beverly said: “ Banking hubs, which are supposed to fill the gap left by the big banks, although laudable, are only a drop in the ocean and the rollout needs to be turbocharged to meet the in-person banking needs of people across the UK.”

In the meantime, Lloyds and Halifax customers who prefer a face to face service will be able to use the Post Office, opened last summer at 363 North End Road, or smaller post office counters within convenience stores on Fulham Broadway or Dawes Road.
