Fulham Brownies' Great Bake Off Raises Hundreds of Pounds
All Saints girls present giant cheque to Great Ormond Street Hospital
The 25th Fulham (All Saints) Brownies have raised £557 for Great Ormond Street Hospital through their own great bake off.
On December 1, the Brownies presented the hospital's Freya Samuelson a huge cheque in aid of Great Ormond Street Hospital Children’s Charity raised in support of the October Bake it Better campaign.
Brown Owl, Claire Shirley, says: “It all started with a letter from Freya to our Chief Guide about the Bake it Better campaign and Sarah Jones of De-licious Cakes by Sarah coming to teach the Brownies how to make cup cakes for their Cook Badge.
" The date happened to coincide with the appeal, so I thought I would challenge the Brownies to raise money and see what happened."
Jessie Alldis (Seconder of the Elves) aged 8, says: “Brown Owl said we could either sell our one cake or be inspired to bake some more with the recipe for cupcakes that Sarah gave us.
" I baked 24 cupcakes. Then 8 of us baked some cupcakes and set up a cake stall near Fulham Football Ground on match day. We sold them for £1 each.
" Some people gave us more than that and others just donated some money. We raised £281 all together, including the money I raised for selling the one I took home. It was fun."
Of the 22 Brownies, everyone raised money in different ways. Amy Schoonhoven baked 24 cupcakes on her own and with her brother set up a stall outside her house and raised £40; Isobel Johnson knocked on her neighbours’ doors and raised £19 by selling her cakes; others baked and sold them to their families and friends and some bought them with their own pocket money. One neighbour and a school family were so inspired that they baked too and added to the total.
The money raised by the seven to 10 year-olds will now go to help the hospital where their friend Georgina Alldis, who was a Rainbow, was helped before she died.
Brown Owl Claire says: " We are delighted it will help provide new facilities for mums and dads to sleep alongside their very ill children. It is such a fantastic charity, I and my fellow leaders are very proud of what the Brownies have achieved."
