Several homes evacuated to allow controlled explosion to take place

A number of houses on St Mary’s Grove in Chiswick had to be evacuated this Wednesday afternoon (26 June) after an unexploded bomb was found in a garden.

The discovery was reported to the police at 1.35pm. The device which is believed to have been dropped during the blitz was dealt with by specialist officers who carried out a controlled explosion.

Nearby Grove Park School asked for parents to come and collect their children early.

A spokesperson for the Metropolitan Police said, "The device has now been safely disposed of by controlled explosion. The incident is now complete.

"Local residents are thanked for their cooperation."

Cllr Curran, Leader of Hounslow Council said, “We were informed by the Police that a suspected World War 2 ordnance had been found in a garden in St Mary’s Grove, Chiswick, at approximately 1.30pm today, Wednesday 26 June.

"The ordnance has now been removed and dealt with safely.

"Cordons that were earlier in place around St Mary’s Grove have now been lifted.

"We thank the police and emergency services for their swift response and cooperation in dealing with this incident.”

Unexploded ordnance from the second world war continues to be discovered fairly regularly in the area, most recently this May when residents were asked to leave their homes in the Bedford Park area.
