Four men on mopeds sealed off a street in Wimbledon Village and threaten passersby with 'acid' to carry out a robbery on a jewellers this Wednesday afternoon (12 September).

The gang who were armed with knives and liquid in bottles believed to contain a corrosive substance set up the roadblock on Church Road by moving a ‘Road Closed’ sign from nearby roadworks.

People in the street witnessing the incident which took place at around 12.45pm ran to local cafes and shops for safety as the robbers made their way toward the Michael Platt jewellers. They crashed through the front door of the shop on their bikes and staff took refuge in a store room.

The shop is owned by Wayne and Elayne Myers who said that the thieves had threatened to throw acid in the face of a woman who was videoing the robbery on her phone.

The shop reopened less than 24 hours after the incident although a crime scene remains in place. Wayne told WimbledonSW19.com, "We will not cower against these brazen people who need to be stopped. We are a small independent business and they are one-off items but we will not be beaten."

The thieves got away with several items including a platinum jewellery, pendants and bracelets with an estimated value of £100,000.

Both mopeds used in the robbery have been recovered but no arrests have been made.

Scotland Yard have appealed for any witnesses to come forward.
