Night Tube Is "Blighting" Lives Of South Wimbledon Residents

Call is made to prioritise tackling local tube noise

A call has been made for the new Deputy Mayor for Transport to make tackling tube noise at South Wimbledon a priority.

Writing to the new Deputy Mayor, Heidi Alexander, in her first week at City Hall, local London Assembly Member Leonie Cooper asked she accompany her on an urgent visit to South Wimbledon station to witness first-hand the excessive noise blighting the lives of local residents.

In her letter to the Deputy Mayor, Ms Cooper said she had received many complaints from local residents about high levels of tube noise in the area around South Wimbledon tube station.

She said the introduction of the Night Tube had led to an increase in complaints, with some residents experiencing noise throughout the night on the two days the Night Tube runs. Her letter also states that the noise inside the carriages themselves is too high.

Transport for London (TfL) are urged to improve their outreach to local residents, with Ms Cooper calling on TfL to making the complaints procedure more accessible.

Local London Assembly Member, Leonie Cooper AM, said: “It’s clear that excessive tube noise is taking its toll on local people, and we need to take action quickly.

“Whilst there have been clear benefits from the introduction of the night tube for our community, it has also meant that noise disrupts local residents all night over the weekend.

“This is simply unacceptable and is why I have wasted no time in writing to the newly appointed Deputy Mayor for Transport, Heidi Alexander, to ask what TfL are doing the resolve the issue and improve their communication and complaints procedures with those affected”.
