A major water main has burst under Tooting High Street this Wednesday leading to a loss of water supply for residents and road closures. The burst hit early this Wednesday morning (7 March) with the main road under several inches of water

The street was covered with debris and water continued to gush from the crack. Fifteen shops have reportedly had their basements flooded.

On Twitter Wandsworth Police said, ‘Motorists and pedestrians are advised to avoid Tooting High Street, SW17 following a suspected burst water pipe. Road closures are in place,’

Thames Water say, “Our engineers reached the scene of the burst very quickly and we have stopped the flooding. Water is now receding.”

“We are really sorry for all the disruption this has caused and we will now work to get the repair completed as quickly as possible.”

They claim residents of south west London who have seen their water supply interrupted after should now be starting to see it return. The cold weather and sudden thaw which followed led to a number of burst pipes in the Thames Water network in the area.

Tooting High Street remains closed but TfL say that buses 44 77 270 355 have now returned to line of route.
