Battersea Power Station - and specifically Circus West Village which is phase 1 of the redevelopment - is competing for an honour at this year’s Royal Town Planning Institute’s (RTPI) Awards for Planning Excellence.

Circus West Village includes 865 homes as well as shops, restaurants, leisure facilities and a new arts and events venue for the local community plus a new stop for the Thames Clipper Service.

Battersea Power Station is among 78 other shortlisted entries including ambitious housing developments, estate regeneration projects and community facilities which are also in the running.

The Awards for Planning Excellence have existed for over 40 years and celebrate exceptional examples of planning and the contribution planners make to society.

A local resident who has just moved into Circus West told this website, "The way the apartment buildings are designed with a row of shop snaking along beneath and a gorgeous residents' garden on the first floor means that I've already started to become part of the local community that's coming together here. You just can't help bumping into your neighbours!"

Other finalists include the Leake Street Arches development of railway arches in Waterloo, Creekside East in Deptford, Camden's Bourne Estate regeneration and the transformation of Longcross Kennels in Runnymede.

John Acres, RTPI President, says, “This year’s finalists reflect the important contribution planners and planning makes to creating great places and tackling the challenges we face across the UK. Planners are taking on new and innovative projects and the finalists show they are succeeding. It’s a huge achievement just to be shortlisted this year given the 6% rise in entries to the awards and the high calibre of entries will make judging very difficult.”

Andrew Jones, Practice Leader Design Planning and Economics at engineering giants AECOM, adds, “AECOM is proud to once again be a headline sponsor of this year’s RTPI Awards for Planning Excellence. The finalists are a diverse mixture of outstanding examples of planning, which demonstrate the breadth of the impact the profession has on quality place making and delivery in the built environment."

Savills estate agent is sponsoring the awards and Head of Planning David Jackson says, “Savills is delighted to be a headline sponsor of the RTPI Awards for Planning Excellence. The finalists reflect the positive impact planning has on our communities and wider society across the UK, Ireland and internationally through exemplary projects, plans and people.”

The winners will be announced during a ceremony at Milton Court in The Barbican on 24 May 2018. Tickets to the ceremony are on sale.
