Royal College of Art's Kyung Hwa Shon inspired by local landmarks and street signs
An Exhibition called Every Second In Between from the Royal College of Art opens White City Place on Wood Lane today, Monday 14 May,
Launching in the WestWorks building, this is the first large scale public art commission for White City Place, showcasing the work of artist Kyung Hwa Shon from the Royal College of Art.
In partnership with landowners Stanhope, Mitsui Fudosan and AIMCo, the exhibition features a 'site-specific' abstract art installation distributed across the new public spaces in White City Place.
The exhibition will be open weekdays between 8am and 6pm and weekends between 10am and 6pm until August.
Through a process of drawings, collage and digital manipulation, the installation combines material and inspiration from local landmarks, urban landscape and street signage, displayed as colourful vinyl stickers across the façade of the WestWorks building.
The artwork will continue with a large scale digital animation of the designs inside the building's lobby. Included are aspects of the iconic Television Centre and Loftus Road Football Stadium, together with brickwork and road markings from the Westway highway and the White City housing estate.
Kyung Hwa Shon has a nomadic practice and Every Second In Between focuses on how increasingly the growth of privately owned public space has blurred the boundaries between public and private experience when navigating through the city.
The exhibition demonstrates how the environment and people in White City are moulding to the shifting landscape as the area undergoes substantial regeneration.
Alistair Shaw, Managing Director at Stanhope, said: "We are very happy to support this exciting exhibition by the Royal College of Art. White City is a new hub for the creative industries and I am delighted that WestWorks is being used and enjoyed by its tenants and the community as intended."
Local people are invited to join Kyung Hwa Shon in conversation with Dr Filipa Matos Wunderlich for the exhibition preview this evening, Monday 14 May between 6pm and 8.30pm , in the WestWorks Studio at White City Place, 201 Wood Lane.
Tomorrow, Tuesday 15 May workers and residents will be given the chance to reclaim their lunch hour on a 45 minute well-being walk around White City led by artist Ania Bas.
The tours, taking place at midday and 1pm will include a complimentary lunch courtesy of Butterscotch Bakery.
