Gas pipes being replaced on W12's main roads
Shepherd's Bush's main thoroughfares are due to be dug up this spring as work begins to replace the area's gas mains pipes.
The upgrade work, which starts on 20 April, will see 6.5km of iron gas mains replaced with new plastic pipes.
Work on the £1.5million project will begin in Goldhawk Road and will then move on to Shepherd’s Bush Green, Uxbridge Road and Shepherd's Bush Road.
The electricity and gas company, National Grid, will be carrying out the work. They say that wherever possible, the new pipes will be inserted into the old ones to minimise the need for excavations and to reduce traffic disruption.
However, they warn that roads and lanes may need to be closed and that the work is likely to continue until the end of the year.
Construction Operations Engineer Pat Nathan, said: “The existing mains have provided many years of service but it is now time to replace them. The new plastic mains will provide a safe, secure and reliable gas supply for the future.
“We will be working hard to minimise disruption and apologise for any inconvenience our works may cause.”
“It’s worth remembering that once they are installed the new mains should last for a minimum of 80 years if they are left undisturbed,” Nathan added.
This work forms part of National Grid’s national mains replacement programme, agreed with the Health and Safety Executive, to replace all metallic mains within 30 metres of buildings.
