Lidl to Open Large New Supermarket in Hammersmith's Kings Mall

Launch could tie with Landsec 's plans to demolish current store in West 12 Centre

A large new branch of no frills supermarket Lidl is to be opened in Kings Mall shopping centre in Hammersmith in July 2020.

The supermarket has not yet announced what this means for the smaller branch of Lidl currently open in the West 12 Shopping Centre in Shepherd's Bush.

However, Landsec, owner of the West 12 Centre on Shepherd's Bush Green has already revealed radical plans which would include demolition of half of the building and closure of the businesses within it, including the Vue cinema and Lidl.

Announcing its plans in February this year, Landsec said: "We are thinking about the site in two halves: the back half containing Vue, Fitness First, Lidl and part of the car park; and the front half containing Aroma, Poundland, Argos, Bush Doctors, Wetherspoons and the Shepherd’s Bush Green frontages.

"When the back half is developed, all retailers there would go e.g. Vue, Fitness First, Lidl. We will definitely bring a supermarket back and are currently in discussions to see who else would want to return."

If these proposals were to go ahead, it would mean a timely relocation for Lidl to new premises in King Street.

Lidl says its new store, which will be around the corner from the long established branch of Sainsbury's in Kings Mall will be twice the size of a normal store.

Also poised to open within the centre is Metro Bank, bringing seven-day-a-week banking to customers and superfast account opening in a new branch currently being fitted out.

This will be second branch of the bank in the borough, alongside the one in Fulham Broadway shopping centre.

There is further good news for Kings Mall with increased investment by Danish gift store Flying Tiger, and American sportswear chain Footlocker, which has increased its lease by five years and is installing a double-height shopfront.

Children's favourite Okido, which has been running arts and science workshops during the summer holidays, now plans to extend its stay. You can find out more about Okido and its events, including The Crafty Robot, offering technology and engineering workshops for kids aged three and up, taking place daily from Saturday 17 - Sunday 25 August and Creative Design, from 27 - 31 August, here.

The new arrivals are a major boost for owners Schroders who bought Kings Mall in 2015 for £153million, and set about revamping and upgrading the centre.

Centre manager Andrew Proctor, said of the new arrivals: "They are huge high street names, so we are delighted to welcome them to Kings Mall, and it will be exciting to see the improvements in the Flying Tiger and Footlocker stores."
