Our Lady of Victories recognised as one of the best
According to new national league tables primary schools in Wandsworth are among the best in the country at teaching English and Maths.
Results from last summer’s Key Stage 2 tests in these core subjects show that the borough’s schools achieved the 14th best combined results across England and Wales.
Particular praise is also due to the pupils and staff at St Anselm’s school in Tooting Bec which was ranked as the ninth best performing school out of the many thousands in England and Wales.
The full results showed that the borough narrowly missed out on securing a national top ten place and that standards of teaching and learning are improving at a faster rate in Wandsworth than almost everywhere else in the country - with the borough rising from the 21st highest performing authority in England and Wales in 2010 to its current ranking of 14th.
The data shows that 80 per cent of 11-year-olds at a Wandsworth primary school are now achieving the nationally expected standard of Level 4 or better as they prepare for the important transition to secondary school.
The national league table also takes account of the average point score achieved by pupils at Key Stage 2. The Wandsworth tally of 28.1 is the joint seventh best ranking in the country.
Wandsworth was also the highest scoring inner city borough, coming close to matching the achievements of more leafy and affluent areas like Buckinghamshire, Rutland, Trafford and east Cheshire. In London rankings, only Richmond, Kingston, Kensington & Chelsea, Sutton and Barnet scored higher.
Cabinet member for education and children’s services Cllr Kathy Tracey said:
“This is a superb achievement by our local schools and reflects the hard work, skill and determination of many teachers, parents and of course the children themselves. Pupils in local schools are massively outperforming and outscoring their peers up and down the country, including those in some of the most affluent parts of the country. That our young people are doing so brilliantly well in these important exams is a testament to the high standards being set by our schools.”
Only two other education authorities, Hampshire and Gloucestershire, also saw two of their schools ranked in the top 25.
