Including a talk by Matt Brown on Unbuilt London
The University of the Third Age, or U3A, is holding its next monthly meeting on Tuesday 11 February at St Mary’s Church Hall on the corner of Edith Road and Hammersmith Road from 10.30 am till 12.30am.
This month's guest speaker is Matt Brown, discussing
Unbuilt London - the extraordinary schemes that did not make it past the planners.
Imagine the Vatican relocating to London, or a model Mars colony on the Jubilee line, or a fungus farm under Tottenham Court Road. Believe it or not, these are all ideas for London that have been considered over the years.
In a fascinating talk that guarantees you will never look at London in the same way, author and journalist Matt Brown will illuminate some of the extraordinary schemes that didn’t make it past the planners.
Matt has been writing professionally about the capital since 2005. His recent books include London Night and Day and Everything You Know About London Is Wrong. He likes to dip into the hidden histories of London, unearthing long-lost stories from newspaper archives, or exploring the parts of the capital not normally accessible, such as sewers, rooftops and basements.
Attendance at U3A meetings is free for members. Visitors are welcome for a donation of £2.50 which will be refunded to those joining on the day.
General meetings are held on the second Tuesday of each month for all members where matters of the day are discussed and a speaker is invited to give a talk.
