Could You Help Improve Starch Green?

Love your street event on Saturday

Did you know that the green space at the junction of Askew Road and Goldhawk Road is now called Starch Green, and was once Gaggle Goose Green, complete with its own village pond?

Now of course these stretches of road around Ravenscourt Park have been taken over by traffic, but could they be improved?

On Saturday June 26, from 11am till 5pm. a group of West London architects will set up camp - literally - on the green, with a drop-in tent where local people are invited to visit and share their ideas for improving the area.

The event, called Love Your Street, is part of the London Festival of Architecture in West London, which starts this weekend and runs for three weeks.

The event has been organised by a group of West London architects and supported by the Hammersmith Society, Brackenbury Residents' Association, Ashchurch Residents' Association and Cathnor Park Area Action group.

The architects who are involved are Assael Architecture, Barroll Webber Architects, CPA, Hugh Broughton Architects, George Stowell, Lifschutz Davidson Sandilands, Paul Murphy Architects and Powell Tuck Associates.

"In Roman times this particular stretch of road was a point of entrance into London but now the traffic has really taken over," says architect George Stowell. " We'd love to hear what local people would do to make it a more enjoyable place to be.

"We are looking for positive ways to improve the area that we can present to the Council. This could be as simple as ideas for signposting the Ravenscourt Park entrances or it could be a radical rethink of the roundabouts - that's up to local input on the day."

As well as the drop-in tent, there will be talks throughout the day on the history of the area, music from a wind quintet at lunchtime, a barbecue from The Eagle Pub, and a coffee stand from Fait Maison, and deck chairs on the Green.
