Service this Sunday Remembers Spanish Civil War Heroes

All welcome to meet at memorial in Bishops Park at 11am

Local residents who gave their lives fighting fascism during the Spanish Civil War will be remembered at a ceremony on Sunday in Fulham's Bishops Park.

The 80th Commemoration of the Battle of Jarama takes place at the Spanish Civil War Memorial above the park's rose garden close to Putney Bridge on Sunday, 26 February at 11am.

Many residents from the International Brigade who volunteered to help fight the nationalists during the war lost their lives in the bloody battle on the banks of Jarama river near Madrid.

"We must never forget the bravery and sacrifice of those residents who lost their lives fighting fascism in this terrible conflict," says Cllr Alan De’Ath, H&F Council’s Borough Representative of the Armed Forces.

Tens of thousands lost their lives in the Battle of Jarama, where Spanish republican forces were bolstered by men and women from Britain, Ireland and beyond.

The service will be attended by the Mayor of Hammersmith & Fulham, Cllr Mercy Umeh, as well as President and Chair of the International Brigade Memorial Trust.

The ceremony will include the laying of wreaths, a short talk on the history of the battle and some readings.

The service is open to all.
