Green Development Launched in Brook Green

Offering energy efficient homes which require hardly any heating

One of London's greenest developments has been launched by Mayor of Hammersmith and Fulham Councillor Frances Stainton in Brook Green.

Sulgrave Gardens, built by Octavia Living, the not-for-profit housing development arm of Octavia Housing, uses what is called a Passivhaus approach, offering the most energy efficient green living to Londoners on all incomes.

Sulgrave Gardens, off Shepherd's Bush Road in the north of Hammersmith, includes 30 homes, with eight private flats, 13 shared shared ownership and nine offered with affordable rent. There are also eight houses, called Greenhauses, including six town houses and two mews houses. Only two town houses are still for sale.

The Passivhaus approach, developed in Germany, aims to drastically reduce air and heat loss so that the resident of Sulgrave Gardens will require hardly any heating. Even in mid-winter residents will be able heat a large living room with the equivalent energy of just 10 tea lights!

As well as the reduced carbon footprint of the homes, they are also equipped with a ventilation system that provides fresh filtered pre-heated air to the house while extracting used air and moisture from the building, which improves the comfort and air quality levels for anyone inside, making it ideal for allergy and hay-fever sufferers.

At the launch, Grahame Hindes of Octavia Living said: “This landmark mixed tenure development demonstrates that all Londoners – not just those on high incomes – can enjoy the environmental, financial and well-being benefits offered by the Passivhaus approach.
