Young Harts Writing Festival Comes to the Lyric


See local young talents go head with professional writers this weekend

The Young Harts Writing Festival is a unique production coming to the Lyric Hammersmith on April 8 and 9, which sees young writers going head to head with professional writers.

On each of the two nights, the festival will present ten short plays - five written by local youngsters and five by professionals.

The aim is to break down boundaries and bridge the gap between young creative talent with the industry.

Young Harts began with a competition inviting The Competition inviting young writers, aged 10 – 25 to submit a ten minute play on the theme of Power.

The five winners were invited to join a master class with acclaimed writer Rikki Beadle Blair, guiding them on further fine tuning their work prior to submitting their final draft and each was appointed a writer as his or her mentor.

The five young writers are: Conor Carroll, Fintan Dineen, Saffia Kavas, Sarah Milton and Tom Taborn.

Meanwhile five professional writers were also commissioned to write to the same brief. They are: Arinze Kene, Isley Lynn, Luke Barnes, Phoebe Eclair-Powell and Somalia Seaton.

All ten plays will be directed by Roy Alexander Weise, Trainee Director at the Royal Court and produced by Ann Akin, Artistic Director of Harts Theatre Company.

The actor will also be a combination of both professional actors, including Osy Ikhile and Theo Barklem-Biggs, and young talent.

The writing festival also has a twist - the author of each piece will not be revealed, and at the end of each night the audience will be asked to vote for the winning play.

Will it be the Young Team or the Professional team? The audience will decide!

The Young Harts Writing Festival take place in the Lyric Hammersmith's Studio on Friday April 8 and Saturday April 9 at 8pm. It lasts 90 minutes and is suitable for all ages.
