A tennis club is looking to add to its portfolio with a new location on an ‘underutilised’ space next to a primary school in West Kensington.

Kensington Tennis Club, which runs venues from the King’s Road to Notting Hill, has applied to construct a ‘muti-use games area’ by Avonmore Primary School. Its website reveals the space will be an AstroTurf court.

The club’s application, which has been filed with Hammersmith and Fulham Council, notes it could also be used as a padel court and that it has been backed by the school and board of governors.

Kensington Tennis Club was approached for comment.

The Mund Street site, off North End Road in the east of the borough, is currently occupied by Avonmore Primary School

It was formerly used by Queensmill School and Fulham Boys School, though Avonmore has taken on the premises on a temporary basis while its Hammersmith base is being redeveloped.

According to Kensington Tennis Club’s application the proposal concerns a tarmac area to the west of the school buildings.

This has previously been used as a playground and staff parking but is currently ‘underutilised’.

“The applicant has been active in sport in the borough since its establishment in 2019, taking advantage of school opening times to use school facilities after hours to teach other children locally,” the submission reads.

“Currently the applicant works with nine local schools, developing after school clubs with them to augment their pupils’ limited exercise time in the school day, and running community sports lessons in the holidays, and is looking to find more sites to better serve more members of the borough. By developing better facilities at the school, we will be able to encourage more community involvement out of hours.”

If approved, the site will be re-surfaced in artificial grass with fencing erected around it.

Lighting is also proposed to allow for opening hours during the winter. The submission’s planning statement adds that due to the site being designated for future development the application is for temporary use only.

Avonmore moved into the Mund Street premises after plans were approved last November to demolish the Hammersmith school and replace it with a new state-of-the-art educational facility and flats.

Cabinet members agreed in 2019 that Avonmore would be the first project in the council’s Community Schools Programme.

The initiative seeks to use funds from new housing built on school sites to help revitalise some of the borough’s primaries.
