Candidates Declared for Two Council By-elections

New councillors to be selected in Hammersmith Broadway and Lillie wards

The votes will take place on 20 February

January 31, 2025

Two Hammersmith and Fulham by-elections are scheduled for late February following the resignation of councillors including a sitting MP.

The Labour MP for Chelsea and Fulham Ben Coleman and a former borough Mayor Emma Apthorp both stepped down in early January.

Mr Coleman told the Local Democracy Reporting Service (LDRS) at the time that it had been a ‘huge honour’ supporting residents and businesses in his Lillie ward and that he will continue to do so as their MP.

He was elected to Parliament at last year’s General Election, turning the seat red for the first time.

Ms Apthorp, who represented Hammersmith Broadway, was the borough’s youngest-ever Mayor when she was appointed to the annual role in 2022.

At a recent Full Council meeting the local authority’s leader Cllr Stephen Cowan said Ms Apthorp stood down after being offered a job at the United Nations.

The two by-elections are penned in for 20 February. Registered voters will need to show photo ID when attending a polling station. If they do not have photo ID, they will need to apply for a Voter Authority Certificate.

Voting by post or proxy are also options, though applications must be submitted with the council by 5 February for post or February 12 for proxy.

The council website has a full list of what is needed to vote, plus the available polling stations.
